Final test

When starting this class at the beginning of the spring semester 2014, I was no a very strong writer. I believe that over the course of the semester my writing skills are only progressing from this point.
At the start of the semester you can see by my first paper that there was a lot of room for improvements. I had a long way to go before I started to enjoy writing papers. My first paper I did not enjoy writing therefore I believe I rushed it and did not take as much time as I should have on it in order to get a better grade. I feel that I was a little bit lazy and it wasn’t until my grade that I realized I could do a lot better if I put my mind to it and if I spent more time rather than trying to do the paper last minute and just get it done because it had to be done, rather than doing it because I find it interesting.
As you saw in my second paper the topic appealed to me more. This made me take more time in look carefully at the actual paper rather than just writing it without caring. I enjoyed writing the second paper and I spent more time on it as I believed that I could write better and actually get something out off it. I feel that the main reason I spent more time on the paper, was in fact because I enjoyed the topic. I just found it easier to write about.
For my last main paper, at first I thought 8 -10 pages I am going to fin it really hard to do. It is going to take so long and I was not looking forward it. Before starting the paper we had to do little writing assignments to help us with this. In fact this did help me out a lot. I set my paper out in the order I was going to write it and I just started writing. This topic was personal to me; therefore I just found it so easy to write. The pages just kept coming and before you know it, I was on 11 pages. I found this paper the best out of them all and I am so glad that I wrote it. I spent a lot of time on this paper but it was time I wanted to spend on it. I believe because I wanted to and I was enjoying it, it made my paper good. Writing this made me enjoy writing papers and I hope it continues that way.
I feel that going through these papers in the order that they was, has only helped me get better. As you can see in my grades and myself when writing, that every paper I turn in or write gets better and better. There is still a long way to go with me regards to my writing. It still is not as good as I want it to be but if I continue to keep going then I will only get better the more I write. I feel that this class has benefited me a lot and that I can take what I have learned into everyday life.
This class has made me become a better writer and I am glad I took this class and have benefited a lot from the work I have done.

Final Paper

Should Woman Footballer have the right to be paid?

Are women footballers treated differently in our society? I believe that when it comes down to football, men are looked at completely differently when compared to women. In the world of football women get treated like football is just a hobby not a job. What society does not realize about women’s football is that women work just as hard as men, but do not get the credit our men footballers get. Our men get paid millions of pounds, whereas women do not even get paid! Is this fair? Of course not and there are many reasons why society is like this; however are there things we can do to change this?
Who is there to say woman footballers do not work as hard as the men do? Men’s football maybe advertised on a wider scale, and this is where most of the money originates; women’s advertisement will never work unless it is experimented with over time. It will never just happen, nothing in life just happens, it takes time, trial and error in order to succeed. Society believes woman footballers do not work as hard, or play as seriously, as men because our media portrays women in this manner. The media feel we are not newsworthy and instead of featuring “up and coming women’s football” showing the blood, sweat and tears which are behind the game, they simply ignore women’s football, with maybe a one-liner every few months to demonstrate it does actually exist.
So without advertisement, will society change their minds?
The male professional footballers are at a different level compared to women professional footballers. However women these days are trying so hard in order to compete at the men’s level. No matter how much time goes on, it is not possible that women will ever equal the standard of men’s pro level footballers, simply because of the biological differences between the sexes.
Men’s games are a lot faster; they are physically able to play at a faster pace. Women can only play as fast as their biological allows and they are generally not naturally up to men’s level of speed. However when you compare pro women, to a standard women’s football team the difference in pace is obvious so, for women, their pro level of football is much faster than a standard team. This can also apply to the physical side of the game; men are, by virtue of their sex, naturally stronger and bulkier than girls no matter how much women train. Many women train exceptionally hard to increase their strength and speed, but cannot match the physical side of men’s. Being stronger and more physical affects the entirety of the game. Men’s games are more interesting to many people because of the pace and physicality of the game. Women pro footballers can compare to a semi pro men’s team, as the women’s team are technically superior and the semi-pros team is nowhere near as fast as a men pro team. This is why many people tend not to watch semi–pro, as they believe the pace of the game is too slow and boring. I believe this is why women’s football is not better publicized in comparison to the extensive advertisement campaigns for the men’s game.
Advertising, promotions and sponsorship are vital and many male footballers increase their income vastly through these processes. In England the Premier League I investigated is one of the best leagues in the country. Many footballers from around the world move to England in order to try and make it into the Premier league. Barclays Bank is the biggest sponsor as they sponsor the actual Premier league.
“Banking giant Barclays has extended its sponsorship of the Premier League in England until 2016 in a three-year deal worth £40m a year from 2013” ( Premier League and Barclays sign new three-year deal).
This demonstrates just how much money is involved in the men’s game. Businesses seriously analyze the advertising benefit when sponsoring a team in the Premier League. To sponsor the Premier League, or any teams involved in this league, results in the company spending large sums of money. Every football team in the Premier League has their own sponsors, for example the biggest teams, like Manchester United, are sponsored by Anon. in 2013/14 they signed a new deal in order to sponsor the Manchester United’s training ground.
“The club today enhanced their chances of reclaiming their position as the highest-earning side in the world with an eight-year deal worth almost $30m (£19.6m) a year, through which Aon will sponsor the Carrington training ground” (Herbert).
This is just one of their sponsorship deals on offer, and every club has more than one entity sponsoring them. Another method of sponsoring teams is to put their business name on footballers’ shirts. For example in 2014/2015 Chevrolet sponsors Manchester United shirts and for the just the 2014-2015season, this deal is worth 45million per year. Manchester United commands the most lucrative sponsorship with shirts as they are the current top team in the Premier League. However a lesser team like Sunderland still has a big sponsorship deal with Invest in Africa currently worth 20 million a year. There are still many more sponsors of the club. Manchester United sponsorship deals keep rising every year.
“Up until now, United has expanded its commercial income from high-profile deals such as the [pounds sterling]80m ($125m) shirt sponsorship with US insurance group Aon, and the [pounds sterling]40m training kit deal with logistics company DHL . United last season earned [pounds sterling]103.4m in commercial revenues, up 27 per cent on the previous season” (Blitz).
Also each player is chosen to be sponsored by some company, whether it is by a brand so that they have to wear the brand’s boots, or possibly a sports drinks company, where the player has to be seen drinking out of their bottles. So you can see where the money comes from in the men’s game: sponsorship is the key money maker in the men’s game.
As well as sponsorships, men’s games are widely televised. Most of the Premier League games are on television and they are viewed by millions of people. It is not just people in England who watch the Premier League; the men get viewers from all over the world.
“Earlier this month, a report was published that said the Premier League was watched by 4.7bn people and that games were streamed into 643m households around the planet.”
This demonstrates how many people actually watch the league. As well as watching the game on television, all the big teams’ stadiums are always packed out; trying to get tickets to a big game is very hard as the tickets tend to not go on sale to the general public. You have to be a member of the club and season ticket holders take up the majority of seats. These are expensive and can have waiting lists of many years. For example, my friend was on the waiting list for 10 years before she got her Arsenal season ticket. This ticket costs her around $1600 a year and it only covers homes games, this demonstrates just how popular a football game can be. I found that Arsenal was shown to be the club that cost the most for a season ticket however the average price ranges from around 489.11 pounds which is around $814.32.
“The BBC Sport Price of Football study found the average price of the most affordable adult season ticket in the top flight has gone from £467.95 to £489.11 in the past year, with seven clubs raising prices this season.”
This just shows how expensive it can be to own a season ticket, not to mention the long wait in order to gain the ticket.
The men’s game prices are a lot different to the women’s as a lot more money is involved in the men’s game compared to women’s. The main reason men get paid so much is because the club is taking in more money from advertising and the men’s fan base. Most men’s games tend to have around 30,000 fans watching in the stands. However, when the main games are played many more fans attend and the stands are full. The Emirates holds up to “60,361 seats”, so when there is a big game going on all these seats are filled. In comparison, Arsenal Women play at Meadow Park, which holds around 200 seats and 3 standing areas. On a good day the Arsenal Women can get up to 2000 if they are lucky. On a regular game day this drops to around 500 people. Therefore, it is disappointing to see that Women’s football does not command the respect and money to pay woman as much as the men.
For woman, the ticket prices and fan base is a lot different compared to men’s. Not many people attend woman’s football matches. This is because they are poorly advertised and not many people know when and where games are being held. Where as an average season ticket holder for a men’s club is around £467.95, to get a season ticket for a woman’s club called Birmingham, the price is around £40.00, which is $67.07. This is a big difference and the men rely on their ticket sales to bring a large amount of money into the club.
When it comes down to how much men in the Premier League get paid, I believe they are paid excessive amounts. The more successful a team is, the higher the salary its team can command: playing for a bigger team the players demand more money. Men footballers perceive footballing as a job, and they do not play for fun anymore. They are never satisfied with how much they get paid, and always demand more. Wayne Rooney from Manchester United is no the highest paid player in the Premier league. He signed a new deal with Manchester United where he earns £300,000 a week. This is around $499,469.73 a week.
“With Wayne Rooney agreeing to sign a new £300,000 per week contract at Old Trafford making the rounds this week, Football Daily has taken a look at the Top 10 Highest Paid Premier League”
The average earning per week in the Premier League is around £22,353, this is around $34,000 and this is without bonuses.
“Average Premier League wages have reached £22,353 a week – before lucrative bonuses – or £1.16million a year.” (Miller)
As you can see even the low paid players are earning an amazing wage, this is in stark contrast.
Many people consider playing football is an easy job in life: However, the society does not realize is that it’s so hard becoming a professional football player that it affects a woman’s life. What society doesn’t realize is that professional woman footballers get paid very little or nothing at all. Within the profession, only two players from each team get paid; the other players only get their expenses paid. I believe this is not good enough! The two players being paid would be the best; however their wages are nowhere near the fantastic amounts male footballers earn and women will tend to find it hard to live solely on money derived from being a footballer. Casey Stone, England captain tells us in an interview about her wages and how she has to have to jobs in order to earn £25,000.
“her wage for both is so low she has to supplement it with two other part time jobs. She estimates that her jobs combined earn her about £25,000 a year – roughly what John Terry earns in a day” (Stoney).
Over the past four years women’s football is becoming more popular every year all over the world not just in the England. Most countries are now investing more money into women’s football as the players are getting bigger and better and present a more interesting game, using their unique skills, as the years pass. Women are becoming like men; they are learning the skills and the methods to play more like men play the game. Many more young girls are playing football; it is accepted and played at schools and many towns have girl’s teams throughout the different age brackets. There are good women role models that young girls aspire to being these days. When I was younger I never knew or heard of any women footballers; I never had a women’s role model, as you never saw or heard of professional woman football players. Nowadays it is gradually changing; advertisement is increasing and young children are watching women’s games. They have some role models they wish to emulate when they are older. In America, women’s football is growing in popularity; little girls are following the USA team and aiming to achieve the same skills, wanting to play for their country when they are older. America is advertising women’s football a lot more than England; however women’s football is still not on TV as the men’s game is. I believe that in the next ten years women’s football will become more prominent as it attracts more advertising and the games will be comprehensively covered by television; this is because of the amount of growth in the game. It is not easy to become a woman footballer – will it become better in years to come?
It is difficult, if not impossible, for women to live off just playing football as most do not get paid. Women football players need full time employment as well as finding time to fit their training sessions and games in. Most women find it hard to get a well paid job they enjoy that allows them to work around their schedules. Most employers obviously put their needs first, since that’s what they pay for, and are not very accommodating concerning outside hobbies. Since women’s football is not represented seriously, most people do not understand the skills, training and physical ability needed to play football as a professional. This is because women do not get the credit they deserve. It is unreasonable to expect a woman with a full time job to also play football to a professional standard, when men do not have to work along side football. One never sees a male pro football player work a day in their professional footballing lives. This is because of all the training they do and the rest and recovery period is just as important as the training. Being a professional footballer is hard work on your muscles, therefore you need to make sure that they have time to rest and recover properly. Women pro footballers do not have the luxury of this rest or recovery time as they need to work in any free time they get. Woman pro’s need to be training just as much as men and just as hard but this is rarely possible as they do not get nearly as much support as the men do.
This is where it gets hard as a woman footballer, as a result of the low income they need to look into finding a job, however this is not that easy; football is their life and they need to find a job that will work around their football schedule. We all know that an average job tends to not worry about other circumstances outside of work, therefore finding a job that will work around your schedule is not just hard but also inconvenient. The job women tend to get are not pleasant and is not the life they want to live, however if they want to continue playing at the level they are, then they need to do whatever it takes. This is where you can find more passion in woman football players compared to men. There are so many more obstacles in the way of women becoming professional footballers that only the really passionate, single minded women can achieve this.
I believe there is an easy solution to solve all these problems in the women’s football; a way to pay women and make their lives better. It will also enable them become better footballers, which in turn will make the women’s game more interesting. This is because they will have time to focus all their attention on practicing and working hard. I believe men earn more than enough money to live on and so each player from the men’s team should get assigned a player on the women’s team. Like the men’s goalkeeper should get the woman goalkeeper. Then men can give their player around £2000 per week, which the men are not even going to notice as they are earning thousands a week. Even if it weren’t equal, this would help women to be able to live and not have to work, apart from their career as a footballer. Also the club does not lose out on any money as they are not the ones paying the woman. That enables clubs to just focus on paying for all the other necessities, like the pitch and training facilities. Also, I believe that many men footballers would feel that this is a good way to get involved in the women’s game as the men and women’s game is separate and they are not involved. We need to bring the woman and men together so that society can see that the football industry is not separated.
I believe that woman’s football need to have money put into it. I feel that if the men’s clubs invest in woman’s football, in the long run they will be making money from it. Just like any investment, it takes time to make money. If you invested in woman’s football, you wont begging to see a profit for a couple of years. However the more you advertise and the people invest in the football, the bigger it is going to get. I believe that is you start advertising it on television, more people will start watching the game, which will make more people wanting to go and watch the woman live. I believe that in time woman’s football will become a business, just like the men’s and it can make people money. However this is never going to happen, unless they are given the opportunity.

final Proposal

In my final paper I am going to write about whether woman football (soccer) player should be paid in the professional industry. I have very strong opinions when it comes down to this topic. Being a football player in England I see and go through the struggles that other woman have to go through. Having to fit football into your everyday working life. Having a full time job and trying to play professional is not easy. So people cannot do it. They’re many things that I am going to talk about in this paper. I will look at both sides of the argument as well as pointing my point across. My arguments for woman footballers to get paid are the following, men get paid so much money that they could not even use. Why can’t they give some so that woman can have a comfortable life. As I said before it is very hard for woman to work full time as well as play football as it is not just about playing. There is a lot practice involved. Woman footballers do not get as much recognition as men do. There games are not advertised, played on TV and have very little media coverage. Woman’s football is improving and is on the rise so they should be backed more.
However there are arguments that support why men get paid what they do and that woman get nothing. Some of these are that men have a bigger fan and support base. People watch men’s football more than they would women. The men’s game is a massive business to get into. The amount of money that the clubs make just on ticket sales.
Here are some sources I found that I would use in my final paper. This is paper talking about the top 10 highest paid men footballers in the English premier league. This article tells us that Wayne Rooney, who plays for Manchester united just signed a new deal with the club making him the highest paid player in the premier league. He is earning £300,000, which is around $499,065.08 a week. The tenth player is David Silver who plays for Manchester city earning £160,000, which is around $266,168. As you can see this is a huge amount of money that these men are earning.
Another website that I will be using showing us how much money the club makes through ticket prices and season holder tickets. Arsenal Fc is known to cost the fans the most to hold a season ticket. An average season ticket for Arsenal Fc costs around £995, which is around $1655. This covers all home games and some away games. Not only does it cost that much to hold a season ticket, in order to get one you need to be on the waiting list that takes up to 10 years. Also it tells use that Arsenal stadium holds up to 60,000 people. Think of how much money the team makes selling tickets. Every game that is played at the Stadium is always booked.
I will also be talking about how much the average woman’s football game costs to go and watch and how much their season tickets cost. This allows me to compare the big difference between the men’s prices and the woman’s ticket prices. Birmingham ladies season ticket cost around $67. This is a big difference compared to the men, which is around $1200 per season.
I am excited about writing this paper and I feel that I have some good strong points and sources that back up my points

Millennials: Revolutionaries of Literacy
In today’s world social networking is prominent. Millions of words are typed daily by students all over the country. Between texting, posting Facebook statuses, and tweeting young people are voicing their opinions through words more than ever. While some encourage this behavior others are opposing it. Many educators feel as though the young generation have completely forgotten how to formally write. Carefully written essays are seldomly seen were as abbreviated terms and acronyms are prevalent. Is illiteracy at hand or is a new form of literacy on the rise?
Clive Thompson, a voice of reason for the young generation, believes that the young people today are not illiterate, but that they simply know how to distinguish who they are writing for at all times, which in turn determines their style of writing. In his article on new literacy he makes the point that students today write for an audience unlike previous generations. Almost everything that is written is posted and viewed by hundreds or thousands of other people. It makes perfect sense to describe situations in a way that your audience can easily understand. If you do not you risk losing your audience and your writing goes unheard. Doctors call it jargon, but young people call it lingo. Why aren’t educators encouraging growth? Is it simply because they do not understand it? People often are intimidated by what they cannot comprehend. Before being a teacher one must learn. Instead of bashing a new way of life why not try to understand it so you can understand your students and become a better teacher. Teaching and learning are directly related. It seems as though many have forgotten this.
Lisa Singleton-Rickman believes that there is some credence in the notions that texting lingo has ruined literacy. In her article, published on timesdaily.com, she argues that electronic communication has taken over and that students immersed in electronic media have neglected the requirements of formal writing in classrooms across the country. Using the Pew Internet and American Life Project “Writing, Technology, and Teens” as the basis for her argument she writes that “the vast amount of cell phone text-based abbreviated communications teens use is showing up in more formal writing.” The study, a phone survey, of 700 youth from the ages of twelve to seventeen states that “60 percent say they don’t consider electronic communications – e-mail, instant messaging, mobile text – to be writing in the formal sense; 63 percent say it has no impact on the writing they do for school but 64 percent report inadvertently using some form of shorthand common to electronic text, including emotions, incorrect grammar or punctuation in formal writing.” While these statistics may seem alarming Thompson uses a more reliable study in his article. He cites Andrea Lunsford, a professor of writing and rhetoric at Stanford University. For six years she collected the writing samples of 14,672 students. Samples varied from formal essays to blog posts. After reviewing her results Lunsford found that the millennial generation is in the midst of a literacy revolution. She states that after examining the works of her first-year students she found no examples of text speak in their academic papers. Seeing that Thompson cited a study that has a little over twenty times as many students and physical proof, it would be wise to say that his findings out shine those of Singleton-Rickman.
Mrs. Singleton-Rickman quotes an 11th grade English advanced placement teacher who says her students struggle with the formal writing process. She says “I’ve realized they very often write the way they speak and they speak the way they text.” This implies that she feels as though text lingo should never be used, not even while texting because it encourages incorrect grammar. Has kairos, assessing an audience and adapting tone and technique to best get a point across, been forgotten by English teachers around the country even though it is an important part of rhetoric? If a paper is going to be peer reviewed why not use terms that your reader will understand? Another thing that seems very alarming is the lack of praise given to students for their increase of writing. It seems as though teachers are only focusing on their terms of what English should be. Does “formal” English writing have to be limited to essays or research papers? The thought of this changing and molding to fit the new generation must be farfetched to professors. Thompson’s article addresses both kairos and praise. He also understands that in-class writing that might only be read by the professor could be the reason that students would rather write for social networks than academic purposes. When students post Facebook statuses or tweet they are doing so to change the world, but in-class writing is only done so to receive a grade. Could this be where a compromise is met? What if formal writing could be geared to be read by thousands over the internet while still receiving a grade for the work? This could change education as we know it. Not only will students be motivated, but teachers will also get to expand their knowledge about their students while performing their academic duties.
Clive Thompson did what he was required to do as a writer and more. He clearly showed why students write the way they do while giving evidence that states texting, Facebook posting, and tweeting using a certain lingo has not caused the millennial generation to become illiterate, but more so become literacy revolutionaries. He even went as far as subliminally suggesting a compromise by encouraging students to write not only to their professors or teaches, but to the world or the World Wide Web to be more specific. One could even go as far as saying that Thompsons article was so well written because he used terms that everyone could understand while serving the purpose of writing to change the world, not to receive a grade. He is a true literacy revolutionary.

Midterm

Mid-Term Essay

Does writing play a part in everyday life? I am going to write about who writing plays an important part in my life itself. Hopefully by the end of this essay, you would get an idea about myself and detail about my writing background.
Before I took this class, writing has never been a strong part of my education. When it comes down top writing essays, text message even e-mail, I find this very hard. My friends and family have noticed this when I text them, email or even put status us on social media. This may only be a sentence; however there will always be something wrong with the small sentence. Before I came to AUM, I studied in New York Rochester. A junior college called Monroe Community College. There I took English comp 1 which required me to write essays. In this class I found it very difficult and struggled with my essay’s extremely. Most off my essays where not good enough and in class I felt like I was the only one who struggled. When reading my class mates essays for per review, I was never able to give good feedback as I believed everyone’s essay was good and strong, especially compared to mine. I just managed to come out of the class with a passing grade. I have never had a good grade in English. Before my junior college, I took English in school. In England I failed English and never managed to pass when leaving school. This makes me not enjoy writing.
On another note since taking this class at AUM it is getting me to write papers and essays. This is making me write drafts, looking over them and touching up on what is need and what needs to be changed, improved. I still find it very hard to write a paper and I don’t think that will ever change, however it is about learning ways to improve and find a better way to get the papers done to the best I can. With anyone the more you write papers the more you will get better. It is like anything in life. The more you practice the better you become.
The problem I have found and people that have looked into my papers in order to help have notice is that the structures of my papers are all over the place. I personally find it hard to start the paper. Not always is it the introduction I found hard. It is the areas I need to write about. How I can back up my arguments or what arguments do I need to include. This takes time for. If there is someone to help me with the outline I find it easier to start and write the paper. As well as grammar and writing errors. I tend to look throw my paper however I find it very hard to see the errors that I have made. I find doing my work in MLA format is very hard for me as I have never heard of this format until I came to America. Also at my other college we only used it once and I have never learnt the correct way to do this. How to sight my papers or use the correct quotations. I find that most of my quotations have been wrong.
When getting my degree and finishing up college I would like to go back to England and continue with my education in order to become a Physical education teacher as well as going in the field of coaching soccer. Coaching soccer does not require high levels of writing, however becoming a teacher, you need to have the basics and be able to write good enough papers for other people to read. Although I do not want to become an English teacher, writing is important when teaching and field. You have students that look up to you and may need your help. Also physical education teacher does not just require being able to coach. It requires classroom session. You need to be able to teach, mark student’s coursework. I also believe that no matter what field you go into in live you are going to need the basics in writing. This maybe come down to writing email to your boss or anyone important. Like I said at the beginning even writing email I find it very difficult. When applying for a job you are going to need to write a resume. You do not want to be going into an interview with spelling and grammar errors in your resume, in fact you would be lucky to even get an interview with a bad resume.
There I feel that writing is important. Taking this class is good for any student, where you are good at writing or not a stronger writer. This class will help you become better and more comfortable in writing essays.

First draft on second paper

In today’s world social networking is big all over the world. Millions of words are typed every day by students all over. Whether it is texting, posting Facebook statuses, or tweeting. Young people are stating their opinions through words more than ever. While some people are encourage this behavior others are disagreeing on it. Many educators feel as though the young generation have completely forgotten how to formally write. Is illiteracy at hand or is this a new form of literacy on the rise?
Clive Thompson, a voice of reason for the Young generation, believes that the young people today are not illiterate, but that they simply know how to distinguish who they are writing for at all times, which in turn determines their style of writing. In his article on new literacy he makes the point that students today write for an audience unlike the older generations. Almost everything that is written these days is posted and viewed by hundreds or thousands of other people. Before being a teacher you must learn. Instead of bashing a new way of life why not try to understand it so you can understand your students and become a better teacher. Teaching and learning are directly related.
Lisa Singleton-Rickman believes that there is some credence in the notions that the way people text and their lingo has ruined today’s literacy. In her article, published on timesdaily.com, she argues that electronic communication has taken over and that students engage more in electronic media and have neglected the requirements of formal writing in classrooms across the country. Using the Internet and American Life Project “Writing, Technology, and Teens” as the basis for her argument she writes that “the vast amount of cell phone text-based abbreviated communications teens use is showing up in more formal writing.” The study, a phone survey, of 700 youth from the ages of twelve to seventeen states that “60 percent say they don’t consider electronic communications – e-mail, instant messaging, mobile text – to be writing in the formal sense; 63 percent say it has no impact on the writing they do for school but 64 percent report inadvertently using some form of shorthand common to electronic text, including emotions, incorrect grammar or punctuation in formal writing.” While these statistics may seem alarming Thompson uses a more reliable study in his article. He cites Andrea Lunsford, a professor of writing and rhetoric at Stanford University. For six years she collected the writing samples of 14,672 students. The samples varied from formal essays to blog posts. After reviewing her results Lunsford found that the younger generation is in the midst of a literacy revolution. Facebook Response

This article is talking about Ashley Payne and teacher from Georgia. Ashley took a trip to Europe and post pictures and comments on Facebook that lead to her getting the option to resign or get fired. Ashley Payne is 24 years old, her photos where of her holding a beer glass and wine. One of the parents of her student found these pictures and put a complaint in.
Ashley Payne resigned from her job however she was fighting it. However she lost her argument. However she had some good points to why she should get her job back. “But Facebook is not the classroom. And it’s not open to the students of my classroom. They are not supposed to see it. I have privacy in place so they don’t see it.” This is true. I believe that she is not doing it in the classroom and her students are not able to see her Facebook so why should she be getting into trouble for this.
Another argument that he layer stated was that if she was in a restaurant with her husband and she was having a glass of wine with her meal. Would it be the same if a parent walked into the restaurant and saw her? No it would not be the same.
There is always going to different point of views to who is write or wrong. Yes certain things should not be posted on social media. However who decides what is suitable. There is always going to be one parent that disagrees with everything. I believe that getting fired is very harsh and they should have been maybe a warning, but losing you job is big. This is her lively hood.
In another article about Facebook it talks about Lewis Cass Intermediate school wants their employees Facebook passwords. Teachers here are arguing that they have the right to their privacy. Facebook is there own media and therefore should not have to give up their passwords. If you want to go onto my Facebook look at my account, however you do not need to no my password. What else are they going to look at with my password that they cant see on my page. Kimberly Hester posted a photo of her co-worker with her pants around her ankles. Hester ended up getting fired due to the fact she refused to hand over her password to her account. “I have the right to privacy,”. Hester began her legal battle. A student’s parent saw the post and reported it to the school.

Final Paper

Lance Ulanoff, a journalist has very strong views about Wikipedia, and the problems that come with it. His article tells us that he believes that Wikipedia is not always 100% accurate. He states that many problems occur when allowing the public to post on other people’s pages. Ulanoff’s main reasoning for all this has become from his own personal experiences and the attack mad on his own personal page. Another entry was made on Wikipedia, a journalist called John Seigdenthaler. Unlanoff fears that with ease of manipulation, this can cause entries to be wrong or completely false. Entries that are mad by authors who have their own opinion to a subject they strongly believe in, can be shown as bias in their writing. He also continues to talk about authors that will put complete falsehood information as a joke. This then causes problems for people that are doing research on the topic, just like Unlanoffs own page “serving in the French Foreign Legion” did not actually happen to him. However Unlanoff does still admit to being a user of Wikipedia, which expresses modern, quick and fast available information. But we must realize that although Unlanoff uses Wikipedia, he does not use this site as a main source.
Ulanoff brings in good points of view in his article. He states that Wikipedia has issues in the fact that it allows people to change other authors post and articles without sighting, which leaves the information to become vulnerable as it is easily accessible, whether the information is correct or incorrect. I believe that Ulanoff Uses his own experience to his previous history with Wikipedia as his main reasoning which makes the article bias. He uses his own stories that only show his own point of view to be correct. Wikipedia is far from perfect, not many sites are perfect however Ulanoff believes that Wikipedia is year form being 100% accurate in there information. Unlanoff created his own site which aloud him to post information about his personal self. He talks about how at first he felt honored to be apart of Wikipedia. He updated his post and wrote information about his own personal background, current activities he liked to participate in. Realizing how easy it was to post things on Wikipedia and that his information went onto the sight straight away. After looking back onto his page he noticed that someone else went and edited his own personal information. How could someone know Ulanoff more than he knows himself? Changing his information to what his done and achieved in his life. “ My hands are deadly weapons. I was a chef. I dated super models.” This is someone that thought it was funny changing another authors post and all the information said about Ulanoff was 100% false. That information could have been on his page for a long time, who knows how long it had been on there. Unlanoff, unaware of how long the author’s change his background information, ho long it had been live on the Wikipedia sight. Also stating that you don’t have to be logged into Wikipedia in order to post or edit entries.
This leads to falsehood, as people tend to believe what they see on the Internet has to be true. That everything that put on web has to be true and 100% reliable. People these days don’t have time to read an entire book or article, which would hold more truth. We tend to believe the web, as it is the quicker and easier option, rather than reading a book. Unlanoff states this by saying, “ However, the reality is that is how the world prefers its information now: interpreted through the prism of belief and self interest.”
John Seigethaler was a victim of authors posting a false allegations on his biography. This entry included information about John and the assassination about John F Kennedy. This was found aproned 6 six year ago and up until this joke, people did not realize how easy it was to change other authors post and information. Not realizing that Wikipedia is in fact authors posting their options and thoughts to information. Not actually 100% facts.
There was a study on Wikipedia has the same views as Unloff. The study Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica talks a lot about two different web links. Wikipedia vs. Britannia. The study was made in order to find out with webpage was more trustworthy. The caparison was done by Nature. “Nature chose articles from both sites on a wide range of topics and sent them to what it called “relevant” field expert for the peer review.” After comparing the articles that where given, we learned that again Wikipedia was in fact the untrustworthiness out of the two. Between both articles, 42 unstable reviews where found. With in all the problems found there where eight serious errors from both. They found factual errors and also misleading information. 162 problems where found from Wikipedia, whereas 123 were found in Britannia. In other words to describe this 3.86 mistakes where found in Wikipedia and 2.93 in Britannia. Both of these sites I believe are untrustworthy.
The article believes that study is good for our society as it allows people to focus on the importance of finding more than one actual source when doing research. The news was told about this study in order to inform uses. Many people believe that everything the look up on the internet is true and that if it comes from Wikipedia, Britannia or other well known website searches to have actual true facts. Where in this case there have been studies to prove that we are wrong and that anyone can put whatever information they like on the web.
I have always been weary of Wikipedia however I never believed how easy it was to add information to this site. In my own personal reviews I have seen some information on Wikipedia to make me believe that not all the information is true. When doing research I still use Wikipedia, however I make sure that I have another source to back my information up. Reading these articles I believe that many other people have the same point of view as me. Although I believe Unlanoff’s article to be very bias he has good reason and evidence to be weary and untrustworthy with Wikipedia.
